I lived in Wisbech from 1975 to 1984 and during that time I became very interested in Wisbech Port, an interest that quickly spread to all East Coast Ports specifically and then to shipping in general. As an ex-sailor myself, I was already halfway there anyway. So, these are the pictures I took in the period 1980 - 85. I acquired my first 'decent' camera in 1980, a Praktica MTL4, and I must say I am quite surprised by the quality of some of these pictures nearly 30 years later.
Not all were taken by me but they are all ships I have seen. I had a friend who was a crane driver at Cliffe Point Power Station on the Orwell and kept his camera by him at all times! You will notice no doubt that not all have fared well with the passage of 2 decades and I apologise for the less than perfect condition of some of the pictures.
They are 35mm colour slides scanned on an Epson V100 and fed through a photolab.
The pictures are ordered alphabetically by the first word of the name and fullest details given with each. My intention is to scan all of the pictures with minimal descriptions first and then go back and fill in the details later as there are about 111 different lots of paperwork I have to sort through first.
The final entry will look something like this:-
Johnson (London) - (UK/985/66 JJ Sietas) Johnson Shipping - unloading timber Wisbech.
Tonnages are deadweight as GRT's never really meant much to me - bit thick!
You will notice that most of the shots are of coasters or short sea traders but there is larger stuff and offshore vessels too. I always preferred coasters because you got more old and odd ones in their number but perhaps not so today.
Uploading these old slides onto Fotopic has awakened my interest in ships after 20 years in hibernation and I am actively visiting ports and harbours again.

I am a 56 year old retired schoolteacher, still almost sane, who has never grown up and quite pleased about it too. I have been interested in railways for at least 49 of those years. I used to love UK railways but what's to love anymore? I do still photograph in this country, mainly in my own locality, but I do find endless parades of Yings a little depressing.
